Purging is what you do when the smoke gets harsh. It doesn't always and it can be avoided. Though sometimes it will happen especially if you are new. Basically the common chamber makes it where the mouthpiece and the purge valve connect to that metal ball on top rather than having a tube that goes down into the base. When you blow into the hose to clear out the old (harsh) smoke you can't build enough pressure to force air into the bowl and out the purge because the air you force in has a direct route right to the purge valve. You can clear that ball out and if you keep blowing you can eventually clear out about the top quarter of the base but never completely. There are a few solutions but mostly just don't worry about it.
