never has this once happened to me. don't blow on it until it stops sparking if it's a ql. it's that simple. if a coal ever explodes in your tongs it's because they are too stiff. i would drop coals a lot and squeeze them to hard (making them explode) with my old tongs then i got some newer ones that weren't nearly as stiff and i haven't dropped a coal since.

oh and why not just close your eyes when your blowing up close?
