Well, I think your question is can you use the "fire pit" ... which makes a lot of sense and is a great idea!

Now, how do you light your coals, without them getting mix up in the fire with the other coals!?

Here is my suggestion. How about taking a metal coat hanger and making a spiral out of it, then manufacture some type of handle onto that, long enough to set the spiral (with natural coals on it) down onto the coals in the pit, and once lit you can easily remove the coals/spiral from the pit!? Make sense?

OK, one more, buy a cast iron skillet at a garage sale / goodwill / etc. The cast iron skillet will conduct the heat from the coals in the pit, to the natural coals in the skillet! You will need a way to take the skillet out, some kind of long handle of some sort ..
