Purging isn't necessary. It's handy but not a must. One of my hookahs is a mya acrylic and it has a purge valve. It doesn't purge well but it's there. I still really like the hookah because its so versatile in other ways. Honestly, I go through most sessions without having to purge at all. Mnage your heat well and there is no need. If your smoke does get way harsh you can just move the coals around and clear the smoke in the base without taking it into your lungs with small cigar or pipe style puffs. However, If your smoke is getting this harsh you are doing something very wrong.
