It is my understanding that the original Jewish settlers went there in the '30s and '40s and that a great deal of Jewish immigration has occurred since the '80s. I didn't get out of the capitol during my brief stay so I have no idea what the rest of region is like. It is my understanding that a massive civil engineering project is underway right now building a massive bridge over the Amur river at a cost over $200 million.
From what little I saw the capitol is prosperous and the economy doing fine.
Also, it seems the cafe owner I mentioned has posted me some of the moassel I had sampled during the trip. I will write up a review when I get the chance.
