Natural coals should be cooked for atleast 5 min, possibly more. Cooked as in "Direct heat applied" then flip them over a few times during the cooking will speed it up. Sometimes, if you start a natural and remove it from the heat, before it is glowing red (or even started ashing) the coal will go out. No matter what you put it on/against (even another coal - it can put out both. the lack of oxgyen and heat will allow them ot go out). Remember, naturals lack the starter chemicals of QL's and need HEAT to "lite".
But even with QL's you should cook a coal till red-hot &/or ashed over, before putting it on the bowl. Less chance of "bad" chemicals getting sucked into your lungs (other than the tobacco and such not).
