as to the temp of the coals like photo said is well above 300, paper burns at 451 and wood takes some more heat to get going , realistically your talking 500-700 i would guesstimate

if youve gone 2 years on a flat top lighting coals and not cracked it your very lucky from all the people that i have heard have issues
