The idea is that you use the hammer after the coals are hot. They are much easier to break at that point and sometimes natural coal can come in very large pieces. These pieces are hard to manage on a bowl but the smaller ones are hard to light on a stome sometimes. so this allows you to lite the whole coal and then break it into pieces you need.
i just think hitting a burning coal to break it indoors is a bad idea, out side with nothing that can catch fire maybe, but sure not inside (and im not the type of person that doesnt like to take any risks, just have a limit)
