actually, because it is such a hot-button issue, cigarette smoke (and the raw ingredients) effects have been studied in-depth. We know what the composition of cigarette smoke is and the effects of those compounds on the body. As far as the addictive aspect of cigarettes, nicotine is far and away the dominant force in being addicted to smoking.
