I swear by needle holes. I feel that the smaller holes prevents the chunks of coal and ash from getting down into the tobacco which can lead to some rather unpleasant flavoring. Usually i just take the needle and go to town, poking a butt ton of holes. it still allows for good airflow, maintains a good amount of heat, but protects the tobacco from debris.
and as we should all know by now, ALWAYS USE PROTECTION.
