I use one of these. You're right about the butane cartridge, you just clip it in and light it up. You get about 9-10 coal lights from each cartridge which isn't great economy but it is effective. If you use it on it's own you have to be careful to balance the coals on the edge and sometimes the parts of the coal that touch the heater don't light properly. I use a small one of these:
I put it directly onto the burner and find it distributes the heat better and lights the coals a little quicker. A pack of 4 butane cartridges is about £7 in the UK. Don't know they cost over there? It's not the cheapest way to light your coals but with the lack of coil burners outside of the US there aren't many options. Good luck!
