As Dunkel said ... 800 years ago they didn't have Quicklights and Three Kings, etc ... they used wood coals!

You can use 100% Real Mesquite, it actually smokes really well! Just make sure it is 100% Mesquite and no chemical additives! I have some Olivewood coals that I can't wait to try!

THIS IS IMPORTANT! - The thing you DO NOT want to use is traditional American BBQ coals, such as kingsford, match light, etc and stuff like that. They are full of chemicals and will give you carbon monoxide poisoning, possibly killing you and that is a BAD thing! duh!
