Common Chamber
The bottom of the stem that fits on top of the glass is called the chamber. In a common chamber, this section is hallow with a hole at the top for each hose port and purge valve. Some hookahs are sold as plated common chambers where a plate is welded on the bottom. Holes are drilled in the plate under each purge valve and hose port. The downside to this method is that the chamber tends to be harder to maintain and the hookah as a whole is harder to purge. These hookahs, however, tend to be less expensive than others.

Traditional Chamber
These chambers have a hole at the bottom of the chamber that leads directly to the hose port or purge valve without sharing smoke with any other component in the chamber.
