HTTPS typically requires a recognized key certificate authority to pass transactions encrypted/securly. If one is expires, formed incorrectly, is flat out homemade, your browser will often notify you. When you do secure transactions online, you want a working SSL (secure socket link) aka HTTPS to be functional before you trust that site with your personal information. You'll see the site's address as HTTPS instead of HTTP. You want a valid secure link established, if it isn't, bad stuff can happen, meaning personal information you provide the site is visible and unencrypted.
