Foil takes more "effort" but gives you significantly more control over heat management. Poking holes is a good way to experiment with different methods of smoking. When you find a pattern that works well for you it will be more rewarding to use foil than a screen could ever be. Every screen that I've seen has holes that are very large and also has a recessed platform for the bowls that rests below the rim of the bowl. This limits the amount of tobacco you can load because you don't want to have the screen touching the screen.
