Yea, you've probably got a burning issue, and as usually ALWAYS make sure your letting your coals get burning red hot before ever let it near your bowl, just the usual check list.
Loosely pack your bowl with a gap so the foil doesn't touch the majority of your tobacco, also quicklights almost always leave my throat a little scratchy, if your using a big QL try switching to natural coals.
Give your bowl time to warm up before going at it. rotate the coals around the edges of the bowl to give the tobacco a nice cook (not fry) and then begin your session.
It just seems to me like you've got WAY to much heat for your bowl.
Give what I said a shot, and hopefully your problem will be solved.
