Personally I believe it's a combination of the dark leaf tobacco and the molasses. Fermented tobacco can have a distinctly BBQ flavor especially flue cured tobacco.

That and most BBQ sauce includes molasses in the recipe.

Not really sure why it swing so drastically in sent and flavor. It's a mystery.
