i don't think you can even reasonably make a heat-resistance comparison between the tempered glass cooktop and a cig/cigar ashtray. that's like comparing the strength of the thick, multi-layer glass used for windows in high-rise buildings to a crystal wine glass.
everyone knows you can shatter common glass with rapid temp fluctuations, but that's not the case here. the cooktop is tempered glass heating from room temp up to it's standard operating temp.
