Doing it without foil just ruins the subtlety of the flavor.
I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of zag, but I do smoke it on a rare occasion and when I do I prefer to add a touch of glycerin and foil it up. I've done the coals direct thing and while it wasn't exactly horrible, it didn't taste nearly as good as with foil.
