If you have cracks on the down stem then you lose alot of the vacuum pressure. I would try to solder it first using plumbing type solder (not electrical) since it does not contain lead. If thats not an option for you then use someting called J.B Weld. Its an epoxy that comes in 2 seperate tubes and when combined becomes very hard. You will find it in Home depot or similar stores.
