I've only done the traditional method once or twice and yes it does burn the tobacco but since the tobacco is moist it doesn't burn in the same way that a cigarette would. The closest equivalent I can really say would be like a cigar based on the texture of the smoke for me, but unlike a cigar you can inhale a little bit although I prefer to still smoke tombac the way I smoke cigars.
I actually prefer to mix shredded tombac in with other tobaccos when I make a moassel. I like the results of this more than smoking tombac alone and it adds a bit more dimension to the smoke.
