True absinthe is brewed and distilled with wormwood at very high concentrations, much higher than is legally acceptable for consumption in the US. The active ingredients in absinthe are alcohol and thujone. The concentrations of both in true absinthe were staggering.
What makes bottles of absinthe illegal in the US (true absinthe still is) is the ridiculously high levels of thujone (a known psychoactive chemical) and the fact that it was originally distilled to astounding alcohol content. Some were 90% by volume or 180 proof.
