I usually break them before putting on the stove to light. Although I haven't tried breaking them with my tongs after they are lit, I do know people do that too though. I just haven't tried that yet. My problem, and I wouldn't say it is a big problem, is that my Diamantes split the long way after they are heated up, but that allows me to spread the heat around more...
