before the shisha even touches the bowl, make sure you break it up pretty well. take out the stems, loosen the clumps, then put it lightly in the bowl, and like he said, dont let it touch the foil, otherwise the tobacco, and also dont light the coal on top of the bowl.
it will take a while to get good at it. i personally am alot better than i was months ago, but i have my problems now and then: one day a flavor will be so yummy and strong, next day you cant even taste it. makes me scratch my head.
main thing is - keep at it and practice.
