i watched john's video yesterday of how he does his pattern and the way i took it was you need to make however many hole patches for the coals you wanna burn, if you wanna burn two, make two hole patches offset, but if you have a dense bowl, it'll easily burn due to only heat being brought into the bowl. So what i did to help this was to have my two patches for my coals, but where there were no coals, i poked 3 or 4 extra holes on each side to "ventilate" it so some fresh air that wasn't heated by the coals could get in as well... this took it from being harsh and easy burning (which is why i ended up "burning and then learning") to smooth, thick, and long lasting
