I usually use cooking tongs (the kind you rotate hot dogs) and hold it over the gas fire for a few minutes and then blow on it to keep it red. A MUCH cheaper method is getting a propane tourch with a self lighter (About $20, refill tanks are cheaper than that) This way I don't have to get off the couch to light my next coal. Personally speaking, after smoking with the natural coal for about 20 min (guessing) I like to break them (In half and then the half into halfs, or four small coals) with a pair of pliers and put them on the edge of the bowl. That last me a good long while, even with 3-8 friends smoking off of it.
