So...I'm moving into a smoke free apartment for graduate school this Fall, and I don't plan on breaking the rules and getting evicted.
I'm thinking about finding a park or nice secluded place to smoke on weekends, but I'd rather not be in excessive public view because, although it might be legal for me to smoke in said place, you know how some people can get about foreign smoking instruments, and I'd really rather not deal with that. I'll be in the mountains in Western North Carolina, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a place... Has anyone else had a similar experience? Any suggestions? Maybe if I dress like a gentleman and stare intently at a newspaper at all times people will leave me alone.

Who cares what people think? Just check the rules if you can smoke at a park or not. Just make sure you have the tobacco on hand to show to cops just in case lol.
And if I was to move to a smoke free apartment, I'd smoke anyway lol. After an hour or so of ventilation or masking with febreeze, you can't even tell you smoked in a room.

You should be fine with smoking in your apartment !
Its not like any body will be able to smell it like cigarettes or anything. just be careful with the coals tho, make extra sure you get a throw rug of some sort ! Seems like a lot less of a hassle to me than to go to a mountain everyday |

I would smoke in there anyway. Just make sure to have the hookah on a cheap rug to prevent burns from fallen coals. And have the hookah put away while not in use so that way it isn't discovered if someone happens to come into your apt while you're not there (i.e. if maintenance or your landlord is permitted in while you are not there).

bro my dorm is smoke free and been smoking for ages. everybody does it. keep it away and inside your apt and you should be fine. if they do checks and all dont worry. open the window and get lysol! take the risk i mean its not like they will evict you if they find out right away im thinking a warning.. at that point take it outside. rebel do it in front of your apt.

Western NC is hippie country. You'll be fine smoking outside. Lots of cool parks around to smoke in.

Hookah gives off vapors, not smoke. Smoke stains walls and other things with smell, vapors is just water. It won't smell.

What I do is leave my window open and smoke and the smoke leaves faster. If you know you'll have maintenance come that day, smoke in the evening after they leave and don't leave the hookah set up. Also unplug the battery from your carbon monoxide detector because the coals will set that thing off! Just in case the coals fall get a rug or something that can cover an area under your hookah. Don't worry too much!

Yes, hookah smoke CAN set off a fire alarm. Depending on its sensitive and how it detects issues (particle beam, smoke volume, heat, etc) it could take longer or no time at all to set it off. Does your apt have a patio or balcony? If so, you should be allowed to smoke on that. As for smoking in a park or something, I'm sure if you do not look suspicious in any way, and maybe even look studious (reading a book, taking notes) that should ease passerbys immensely. I know when I smoke on my front porch I used to get looks from neighbors, but now since I read while on the porch, they barely give me a second glance.

Some good advice here. I kinda have the same problem but figured the hookah smoke wouldnt linger and stink everything up the way cigarettes do so it shouldnt be a problem

I have a balcony but I like smoking indoor its so much better haha. Thanks for the info on the smoke detectors. I guess I will just try it out and if it sets it of I will run the hookah to the balcony (with a wind cover on the avoid carpet burns) LOL

as for setting off alarms,
im so badass that i blew the smoke out directly over the fire alarm and nothing happened. however after placing the shisha somewhat underneath the fire alarm, the heat and carbon monoxide from the coal set the alarm off - after all, it is a carbon monoxide sensor. my mate lives in a smoke free apartment and we smoke shisha every night, all we do is cover the fire alarm with a plastic bag and rubberband/ripped strip of plastic bag and smoke away. the owner of the property comes every now and then during the day to check up on things and has never detected a hint of any form of smoking (a well placed table covered up a coal burn!). this was without using febreeze or any odour mask. so in short, shisha smoke wont set off an alarm, but the coals will. especially if they are swift lights. |

I think you're best off respecting the landlord's wishes and not smoking.
