i came up with this foil on the windcover instead of the bowl and i put a screen on the bowl
works quite well, what do u guys think

Edit: i used a screen on the bowl, then 2 coals on the metal screen.... and then beacuse i had limited amount of foil i put the windcover on the bowl and foil on top of the windcover to trap the heat within the windcover.

Benefits:
. Only uses one coal
. Easily smoke different sessions one after eachother, only need to load up the tobacco, and light a coal, no fiddling with "drum-tight'' foil on the bowl. Saves time!
. If your a clumsy person or surrounded by mates, then you wouldnt have to worry as much when someone tips the hookah as the windcover will save the coals burning the floor?
. From what ive experienced it gives a great smoke, even with QL's and doesnt get harsh
. No need to ash the coals, ever. Just keep smokin!

Im assuming the thought procces would be that there is NO direct heat and 100% indirect. So your creating an area that holds a temp to bake the entire bowl constantly vs just the top layer and having to have the heat travel through. So ideally, theres no risk of burning or harshness.

Could work well although to have the coals that far away youd need 2x as many. feel like its a good idea in theory but not reality :/

This. You have to use more heat when underpacking a bowl, can't imagine how much heat you'd need when the coal is sitting up that high.

I agree I don't see how it could work very well, but hey maybe I could be wrong.

The bowl had a screen on it, 2 coals on the screen, then a windcover on top to trap the heat, and foil on top of the windcover to Keep the heat within the windcover.

so, my question is what does this accomplish? Do you use less coal with this method? Does it keep the smoke more constant and even? More flavor?
It looks like, in theory, that it would be a great way to reduce the amount of coal used by keeping more heat insulated.
Please do not read this with any snarky-ness as I'm actually intrigued as to if this would work. I could see cutting one coal in half, and using this method to keep enough heat to smoke with working in theory. And, if thats the case it would be great.

I still dont really understand the point. Seems like you would have more then enough heat with the coal and the windcover without the extra foil on top?

the reason a wind cover has the hole at the top is to allow ample oxygen in the chamber to heat the coals while containing the excess heat. if you block off the oxygen then the coals will be suffocated and go out.

just a little FYI.

I dont see how this is more beneficial than using just a normal windcover

i only had some torn up foil, none worthy to use on the bowl and this cuts coal use, i actually only needed 1 coal once it was heated up ,so if u have a screen and only say 1 coal and realised by now that smoking with a screen is a pain in the arse and doesnt work then this method makes good use of the screen, you could use the foil again and again because it only traps heat in the windcover, this gives a even cooking of the flavour and gives FRESH taste and if set up correcly..... Good amount of clouds, the sort u would get from the standard method.

This cuts coal use, and gives a clean smoking exerience, barely feels like you're smoking coals, by the way i was using QL's And this worked like a dream for me

read the full post. the method contradicts itself. you say it provides more heat but your suffocating the coals, thus getting less heat.

Try this:

use foil for the bowl and move the screen to cover the hole at the top of the windcover. throw a coal on the bowl and cover. the screen lets air in, and since its metal, and not heat resistant like foil, it will heat up and resonate heat through the windcover, thus providing more of what you want I think. ill actualy try something like this maybe, and post my results

no but the method doesnt contradict itself, i did put holes on the foil on top of the windcover to let SOME of the oxygen in, bit only about 2 slits, nothing major.

Youve got it wrong, the coal goes on top of your metal screen [ metal screen goes on your bowl]
