no they aren't. It might be your hose that is restricting the air or not enough holes in your foil. possibly packing too tight if using an egyptian bowl.

Yep..... and 22” is NOT a tall pipe. Ive got 40”+ in the rotation. Incidentally, those chinese common chamber rigs dont perform as well as traditional chambered pipes.

'Modern' hookahs usually have a less restricted draw, no? Aren't they usually much wider? Atleast it's true for all hookahs I ever owned.

Or did you mean that chinese hookahs usually are poorly made?

Anyway, I doubt the hookah is the culprit here. Maybe a few photos of your setup could help us identify the issue.

it's possible that you got a bad bowl with little air flow through the holes. A good egyptian bowl will smoke just fine though. A good phunnel is nice to have anyway, just make sure it is stoneware and not ceramic. Also your foil will need to be really tight or you might have a restricted draw on the phunnel if it starts to sag.

if you are getting very little air flow every time you put the bowl on the glazing is probably blocking the holes or the holes are just too small to begin with. assemble the pipe and put your hand over the bowl port. take a draw and see if you get any air flow. if you are getting very little air flow to begin with I highly doubt you have a air leak.
