Default Heat Management

I've been smoking shisha for about 3 years now and I still don't feel like I've nailed it. I know how to get a nice thick smoke, but I can never seem to sustain it, the bowl either gets too cold and stops smoking as much, or overheats and starts burning the tobacco. I seem to spend all of my time repositioning the coals around the bowl to make sure I get good smoke!

I've read a lot about it and watched a lot of videos on heat management and nothing seems to really do the trick.

I always sprinkle my tobacco into the bowl (standard MYA bowl), making sure it doesn't go above the rim. Put proper foil on the bowl, tight, with a decent amount of holes (recently tried putting a few less on because I read that too many holes can allow too much air into the bowl and cause the tobacco to burn). I've tried 3 different coals - 'coco brico', 'smokers coals' (I think these are compressed natural charcoals), and some instant light ones. Maybe the coals are too hot and natural ones would be better?

Any help would be much appreciated

Chris

i have the same problem. i started to start with 2 coals and about half hour in, put one fresh coal on and remove the others, keeps it warm without getting too hot, also when you first put the coals on, leave on for a few minutes, then repostion and wait a few minutes then start to smoke, that made a big flavor difference for me

Change the Mya bowl for a Phunnel or Crown. You will see epic results.

Cheers scribble1531, I'll try that this afternoon. Cheers Zukky, I'm gonna buy a vortex bowl.

Do you guys use a windshield at all? I've heard that it can be useful to start a session with one and then take it off after the bowl has been warmed a bit...?

The more accurate term is wind cover.

I always use a wind cover. It helps heat management immensely. Also, Mya bowls are hard to heat manage in general. In my opinion, having both an egyptian and a phunnel (tangiers or crown only) is a way better option than a vortex.

change your bowl and get a wind cover. If you don't want to buy a windcover build one out of foil, i pretty sure sambooka has a video on how to make one
