Maybe this is just me, but I would prefer no TVs, no games consoles, no pool tables; just some excellent shisha and music that is not loud so i can enjoy a nice shisha and talk with others. Too many places these days are packed full of the wrong crowd due to things like TVs and games consoles.

I agree. The successful lounges near me don't rely on things like TV's, pool, tables, games, etc. the main focus is on the hookah and creating a relaxing place for people to socialize and unwind. Music is fine as long as it's not obnoxiously loud.

If you want a place that is geared more towards lovers of the hookah experience, remember that hookah is about socializing and talking with the hookah as the focal point.

I also avoid places that have TVs, pool tables etc. In fact, I actively loathe places that have TVs because they almost always have some sports game going on and a loud bunch of assholes hooting about it.

Hookah and relaxed music have already been mentioned, but I'd like to add: hiring some local artists to do some stylized/abstract art murals across the walls. The place that used to be around here had some fantastic artwork and it can only add to the atmosphere. Slightly warm and slightly dimmed lighting works great to set a relaxed mood and some cushioned benches or booth-type seats wrapped around a hookah centerpiece are really nice. Putting it on a milk-crate sized box helps it keep from being bumped and elevates medium-large hookahs to be at a nice looking level without blocking the view of other people.

One downside I've seen in a few places though: no small-group seating. There are always going to be groups of 6-8 people and that's great, but it's obnoxious to have two people sitting in a big area that other groups could use. Having a few smaller seating areas with 2-3 seats would be good I think, especially for couples on dates or trios of friends.

Those are things I like anyway.
