Default Straight razor shaving

So early this morning, Madwolf and I somehow got on the topic of shaving. He said that he uses some razors that are over a hundred years old, and some soap that he says feels and smells fantastic. My interest is now piqued. I'm looking to get a cheap, but decent (think MZ of razors) setup to try out shaving with a straight razor. If I like it, I'll most likely do what I do best and start collecting. But if I don't like it and go back to safety razors, then I didn't spend god knows how much money starting up. Any info would be appreciated.

Buy a disposable blade straight razor. All the fun of a straight razor without the work. I'd go with this option to see if it was something you'd really like to commit to. Worst case scenario, you're out $20 and have terrible facial scarring.

Also, if you haven't tried a double edged safety razor, I'd recommend it as a happy medium. You'll still get a super close shave. You can still collect antique razors. You still feel like a manly man, and the best part is there's 60% less chance of death by shaving accident! But seriously, I switched from modern safety razors to a double edged razor over a year ago and I haven't gone back. I also haven't used up the $5 box of replacement blades that I ordered at the same time.

I have also switched to a double edge razor from the modern gilette razors for a couple og months and never and will not look back to the modern razors. I would recommed to get s double edge razor before getting into straight shaving because it s easier compared to the straight razor but you still have to learn the techniques about the blade angle and making your own soap. Btw the disposal straight razor also known as a shavette dont shave as hood as a real straight but you will still feel if it is something you want because of the grip and straight shaving is not going to be cheap as well. Check Badgerandblade.com they have a great forum with knowledge people that would help you if you got some problems with the techniques etc and if you got questions they will be more than happy to answer.

I've been wanting to try a straight or double edge safety razor for a long time now. What's stopping me is this effin mole on my neck. It's not big, but I don't want to be hacking it every morning. My gillette blades glide over it, will a straight or safety razor glide over it as well?

If you're careful enough you'll probably be fine. You just have to take things slow and be sure to keep the skin taunt. In fact I'd probably go over just that area with a normal razor until I got the hang of it. When I've been in a hurry, I have shaved of zits by accident. Worst case scenario, you never have to worry about that pesky mole ever again. I'd definitely try out the safety razor before the straight razor.

I was thinking the same thing about using a regular razor on that area. Thanks.

I have a DOVO that I try shaving with every so often. I usually go back to a double edge safety razor after cutting myself.
