I could add 1 more thing to the guide, do not use QL coals... Never got sick from natural coals (knock on wood), but I did get sick several times from QL's

Simply put hookah sickness is caused by CO poisoning and it can be avoided by slow, shallow draws, plenty of liquid & food and properly lighting coals. If you hoover away for hours you'll be sick. High nicotine simply isn't a problem if you smoke sensibly. What you smoke is far less critical then how you smoke.

Actually this may sound a bit odd but coca-cola with some ice can actually help as well, the caffeine helps to relieve the light headed feeling, and the sugar from the coke can help to alleviate a hypoglycemic feeling too................Source- I am a medical student and DA(Doctor's Assistant)................i also give it to hookah newbies, that get hookah sickness and works great

Unless you have acid reflux. Or more commonly heart burn.

Great guide!
This is kind of a comical subject, But with all seriousness can be pretty debilitating to a newbie.
maybe it was cigarettes, maybe it was vaping, or a combination of both, but i've never even got to spinning when i get up. Lucky i guess.

Did have a buddy, that, although it wasn't his first time smoking hookah, it was his first time REALLY smoking hookah. We were at a lounge, and i believe the mix was mostly nakhla. He started hovering it, trying to impress us with his clouds, and after about 30 min, excuses himself to the bathroom. We didn't think anything of it. After about 3 more trips to the bathroom, with a lot of smoking in between, the guy admitted he had been puking!. We did the right thing and took him outside to set down, and got him a bottle of water. From what i heard, he went home and laid down for a good 3 hours before he felt good enough to get up.
Needless to say we haven't been able to get him to come to the lounge since.

moral of the story, if your with a noob, watch em, and don't let em show off. As OP said, best way to deal with it is to not get it.

My recomendations are,
1. Make sure coals are lit all the way (carbonmonxide causes head aches and stomach aches)

2. Drink plenty of fluids. (This keeps dehydration from setting in)

3. Eat food (the food helps settle your stomach by helping asorbing and flush any toxin through your body.)

4. Wait 15-30 second between puffs/draws.

5. DON'T SMOKE STARBUZZ!!!... lol just kidding... I had to throw that in for fun...

6. Set up a session and enjoy.

If you want to prevent being sick:

1. Use Naturals over Quicklights, if you have to use QL make sure black is gone

2. Smoke after eating a meal, if you haven't eaten all day order something at the lounge why they are prepping your hookah or eat it why your smoking even if it is a bag of chips your saving yourself a world of hurt

3. Fluids help and if the lounge you smoke at has poor AC your gonna need the fluids to cool yourself down

4. Smoke in a well ventilated area, smoking by yourself or with a small group of friends decreases your chances of getting sick by CO or fumes by quicklights because your not filling a room up with CO, Fumes and Smoke and sitting in it with like 30 other hookahs doing the same thing.

5. Make sure your water is at the proper level and you don't have too much increased resistance in inhaling can cause headaches.

6. If your drinking something avoid Dairy based products specifically Milkshakes and Ice Creme. You ever wonder why your doctor says don't drink Dairy Products when your sick.....Because you will vomit your stomach can't keep it down.

I have gotten hookah sick a few times but I have only puked once fresh air does help so does eating if you haven't eaten anything all day and your SURE you can keep it down.

If you start to develop a headache or lightheadedness space out your hits, I was practicing a trick that caused me to take giant inhales and god knows I got a headache so I chilled out and relaxed and did some light puffing and it went away

There are actually a couple things you can do to get rid of these bad side effects, some of which have already been mentioned. Like the " don't use quicklites " tip. However there is much more information available if your really serious about smoking your hookah without getting sick. Pretty short and sweet too. http://thehookahsupply.com/cure-your-hookah-sickness/
