Default Guide to Hookah Sickness

I've seen several posts around the forum regarding hookah sickness, so I thought I would start a formal guide to help combat the dreaded ailment.

The first and best way to combat hookah sickness is to not get it at all. Don't over-do it when you're smoking; in the words of Dunkel, "Don't hoover it." Take a drag once every thirty seconds or so. If you're smoking with your friends, you don't have to try to be some pro who can chain hit full drags...don't let pride get you sick.

But whatever happens happens, so here are some tips for if you do get sick:

-The first and obvious thing to do is to stop smoking. Trust me, your session is over.

-If you're smoking inside, leave the room you were smoking in if at all possible. You need fresh air.

-Grab some cold water, and if you haven't had anything to eat (which you really shouldn't smoke on an empty stomach anyway) some slices of bread.

-Lay flat on your back. Have a slice of bread and sip your water. Try not to get up and/or walk around, laying on your back should make it feel better.

-Take nice, deep breaths in through your nose, and out through your mouth.

Let the sickness run its course. There really is no actual "cure" to hookah sickness, your body has to regulate itself. It normally lasts an average of anywhere between a half an hour to two hours.

Feel free to add any tips that you folks may have, I hope this helps some of you!

Caffeine will clear the headache up in about 15 minutes.

how about "don't use quick-lites"? and if you do, make sure they are either completely red, or ashed over; not black.

Thank goodness I've never had "THE SICKNESS", I normally eat before anyways, so I don't get it.

well any military doctor will tell you to drink water and take ibuprofen, and to take the latter you need food, so bam.

but yeah, hydration is the key to smoking, need it before and after.

headaches come from nicotine poisoning, co2 poisoning or additives in the charcoal...

if you dont stop smoking you risk throwing up, eating a migraine, or passing out.

if youre buzzed hard before intolerable levels of headache, food helps, if youre already "poisoned" its just gonna make you throw up. fresh air is always great, drink water helps too.

everytime i get a headache, fresh air usually gets rid of it as long as i quit smoking before as soon as i notice it

I have had the sickness once... and it was def from some nicotine poisoning (i smoked for like 8 hours). I threw up and was sick for the next day.

I like this guide.. hope many people read it.

lol yeah i had a friend at a lounge in MO pass out and break a table in half. the owner was a really cool guy though. they offered to pay for it but he said it was fine and he even said that it wasn't the first time it had happened...

my local lounge serves one of the best turkey sandwiches i have ever had so i usually order up one of those before i smoke and i'm good to go!

but yeah i've been there and had to learn the hard way. it's just so hard not to smoke for a while when your back in your home town catching up with friends...

I'd say the top issue is to not use crappy Ql coals.

It's also a good idea not to smoke when you're tired. I noticed I get sicker when I smoke within 2 hours of going to sleep.

great guide! I have had people come over and try to impress dates and friends by taking big hits and blowing rings the entire time...about an hour late they are complaining of headaches and now 1 particular person doesn't want to smoke hookah anymore haha....

anyway, LOTS N LOTS OF WATER!

i've had a bad experience one time, just finished smoking a cigar then proceeded to chain a bunch of big hits off the hookah ending up yacking. I really wished i hadn't eaten hot wings for dinner that night.

I got sick of off of Romman Double Apple when I first started and it was a horrible feeling. I'm not sure if it was that I didn't fully heat up the quicklights or just it was the first time I had smoked such a robust flavor. So now I only use exotica coals and it has seemed to help. I still can't smoke double apple, I smell the anise and it just makes me sick. I try to eat lighter foods before smoking, nothing real heavy of spicy, if I can. Then while I'm smoking, lots of water and I limit my alcohol consumption, its fun to exhale the smoke out into a straw so that it bubbles out of my drink and lays in my glass.

last night at the only local hookah bar i can stand we know the owners so we get unlimited bowls for 5 bucks !! Me, my Girlfriend, Her friend, and some guy that was trying to get with her friend smoked at least five bowls
af watermelon, migrant worker(house blend),sb blue mist, pumpkin pie,and tangiers bubble gum
the guy that came along with us was chaining everything he said he smoked hookah every day but i could tell he didn't, it was fine till the tangiers came around the kid got so sick i felt bad but it was also kinda funny cause i told hime not to chain the tangiers if it was his first time smoking it!!
