Default Coconara vs Exotica

I've been experimenting with Coco Nara and Exotica (have 8.1 -bamboo- presently) coals.

The experience is very much different between the two. Here is how I see it:

Coco Nara
Pro:
-Light quickly and you don't have to break em.
-Maintain a low resting heat and are able to move very rapidly to a higher temp when you pull, making heat management fairly painless
-Very little odor when lighting
-Small, so you can fit a wind cover on while still having them at the edge
-They barely ash at all and last a fairly long time, effective even when burnt-down very small.
Con:
-
they do add a slightly unpleasant taste (and it's not because I'm not heating them all the way first)... kinda like the aftertaste of vomit. Took a while for me to lock this down, as at first I though it was something to do with my setup.
-with some shisha/bowl combinations the heat just isn't there... I think due to how much they cool when you're not pulling... reducing the effective vapor you get in, say, a phunnel.

Exotica
Pro:
-Also light quickly, maybe just a minute more than Cocos
-They impart no taste whatsoever, at all
-They stay hotter on a more consistent basis, keeping the bowl nice and hot
Con:
-They ash a lot. A lot.
-Since they stay hotter throughout, heat management is more rigorous. You have to rotate them regularly and sometimes remove them entirely for a few minutes (since the bowl is so hot the vapor is still there during this time).
-They do put out a little stink when lighting
-When they get down fairly small the heat isn't really there as much.
-Since they are so long you can't really use a wind-cover (and keep them to the outside) until maybe 20min into the session, although since they stay so hot you generally don't need a cover anyway.

Verdict
They are both great coals, each suited for different uses and situations. In the end I prefer the Exoticas and will turn to them unless something about the specific session demands the Cocos (say, if I won't be able to rotate the coals frequently or if I really need to use a cover from the get-go). I don't mind the extra work with the Exoticas; although the ashing can be a slight pain, the simple fact that they allow for better, cleaner flavor puts them ahead in my book. Coco Nara is a little cheaper than the new Exotica 8.1 (older Exotica versions are cheaper than Cocos), but TBQH I don't care - quality of smoke/vapor is paramount.

I have used Coco Nara coals for quite sometime. With no problems. On a hot coil. These coals need to be red hot and with a white ash. They sometimes need to be flipped during the session for an even burn. I like Coco Nara. However, the size of the coals seem the vary.

I'd never noticed the weird taste until I spent some time away, then I could discern it, just slightly, on the finish.

And, yes: they need to be flipped. But I think that is pretty much standard with anything

have you tried these new(er) ones?

I find them to be more porous than even the 8.0s, so they rest a little cooler and pull a little hotter than previous versions.

8.1 Exoticas are made from bamboo. That could explain some differences from the other lines.

Exoticas over Coco Naras any day. I actually like how they ash as compared to other coals.

The Naras I got from you were good but out of all the coals I've tried Exoticas are just the right fit for me. Don't make me steal your Farida.

Indeed.

I hope the price-point comes down on them soon. They definitely burn a little better than the previous, in terms of heat management. As far as I can tell they've lost nothing and gained some.

Yeah

It can help insulate things a little and mitigate over-heating. Only problem is that sometimes the ash will clog the holes in the foil, so you have to blow it off. No biggie

Totally agreed. Personally I think every natural coal smells like rank ass when you light it but when you put it on the bowl that smell goes away quickly and there is no taste.

Yep, same here. There's no need.

Having:

-not been allowed to post a legitimate vender review
-had my sig edited with no notice even though the rules allow for pics and links to personal websites (and not having my PM to the mods about it even responded to)
-had my music thread locked for no good reason

I'm out of here.
