Default Hole Pattern

Does the foil hole pattern actual matter depending on your tobacco brand/flavor?

It depends on both the tobacco and the bowl type.

My two cents. Assuming you're not using an "iffy" funnel with the spire close to the rim. How many is the key variable. Things that don't like heat like Tangiers, you want a lot of holes as a heat vent. Things that want heat like Nakhla, DM etc. you want few holes to retain heat. I'll leave the cheap funnel gyrations to others.

short answer yes. Long answer no.

Holes are for 2 things. Airflow and Heat transfer. You want enough holes to get a wide enough draw for your preference, and enough holes where a appropriate amount of heat transfers through. The actual pattern is irrelevant.

What are you smoking? Tangiers lots. Nakla just enough for a good draw. Things in between practice. If it scorches easily you have too few holes. If it never clouds up like it should you have too many holes. I'd love to give numbers, but in this case, experience really is the best teacher.

its all preference. lots of small hole will generally yield a smoother smoke because there is less direct heat contacting with the tobacco. Likewise, less BIG holes should yield a much more robust smoke. Just make sure yu manage heat correctly

I used to obsess about hole patterns, like study how everyone did them and make sure to emulate. What I found is, with a crown classic, try to keep them away from the edges where the holes are (and I have done it by mistake thinking it was a funnel, it didnt matter much) with a funnel, I dont poke holes in the very center (again, have done it by accident thinking it was a CC, didnt seem to matter). Heat is the more important thing, so just put some holes in there and you will find your way. I dont count or make geometric patterns, I just make some holes and light some coals.

I don't get it ...

I was thinking that a lot of holes would allow to draw a lot of heat from the coals.

While if you are making few holes (or no hole - like I saw a video here) - means that shisha will get only radiated heat and not direct heat.

Two different ways to do it, when done correctly will yield the same results.

1) nakhla with 40 or so little holes will take a bit longer to change tempatures throughout the session because the heat is retained a bit better. Meaning if it takes a bit more effort to burn a bowl without realizing. Likewise, if you burn a bowl, chances are its gunna be a bit harder to neutralize on account of the bowl retaining the heat a bit better. You'll notice you can load on the heat early on and then you can use minial coals and a windcover to keep the bowl going.

2) nakhla 15 or so big holes will be quicker in response to year management on account of the coals having more direct interaction with the coals. This bowl OS easier yo get smoking big and quick but is also a but more succeptable to burning. You'll notice almost as soon as you put on coals it'll start smoking. Likewise if it gets burned, take the coals off and it'll coal down rather quickly.

The point is, if its weak add coals. If its harsh remove them. However with different amounts of holes(air and heat flow) you will need different amount if BASE heat(meaning "how many coals do you use on a bowl" if you answer "2", that's your base heat. For exqmple, 2 and a wincover is my personal base heat for most applications)
