How dare you. AF GRAPE is amazing!

And to add my 2 cents to OP's question, I've bought some very old El Hennawy that expired in 2008... some of the flavors were still good while others were very questionable. I feel like it can be hit or miss with very old flavors, but ones that are a couple of months to even a year should be fine.

Whether it be pipe tobacco, cigars or moassel, the tobacco industry cognoscenti all agree that after 6 years ( no matter how well stored) tobaccos will begin to lose " something" ( essential oils, flavor...)

With hookah tobacco, stronger flavors ( mint, cinnamon, black leaf...) will fare better over time than more delicate flavors ( vanilla for example)

And as far as AF grape is concerned, Stubbes...... oh i dare, ketchup boy. I dare!

Nothing "inadvisable" about smoking " expired" shisha tobacco. It is neither more nor less deleterious to ones health than any other tobacco.

That got me thinking, why the expiry date if it's insignificant?

I didnt say it was insignificant. I said it presented neither greater nor less appreciable risk to ones health.

The date is helpful to distributors and retailers in facilitating "fifo" for stock rotation.

Af and SB are the only two tobaccos i stock that date their tobacco (both their use by dates are two years from production date) . Fumari, Social smoke, Nirvana and Nakhla have none.

Anecdotally, ive been smoking my way through Nakhla cardamon left over from the Hookah lounge thats over 4 years old and i once forgot about a 250 g pack of Tang orange soda.... i rediscovered it 5 yrs later. It smoked fine.

I recently bought a Starbuzz flavor from my local head shop and when i went home I noticed that the expiration date was 2012!! I didn't want to drive back to the store so I decided to take a chance and the flavor was faded out and not true to the original. Since then I've been really careful to check expiration dates and preferably buy as fresh as possible. it does make a difference for me.

Youre problem was with your choice of tobacco not it's use by date. Lol. The retailer did you a favor by selling you Star Buzz whose flavor had faded. It was a mercy.

Wow! That's a realization. Aged tobacco might smoke better than a new. Although proper packaging is required to keep tobacco for a long period of time to retain its value.
