Default Can doing this damage my coil burner or poison my coals?

I recently picked up a bad batch of Coco Naras. They're bad because they take longer to light and when I flip them over the top side gets black in a minute. My friends that also buy their Coco Naras from the same store are having the same problems.

So for the last week I've been putting my windcover on the coil burner when my coals are cooking, and the coals are glowing hot in 5 minutes. But I've been thinking, and could this damage my burner? Also there is a slight metallic smell when I leave the windcover on (I only do it outdoors), could this be poisoning my coals? I figured that the outer layer on the coals burns off anyways, so it couldn't really keep the metal in it.

There's some pictures below. The windcover has also started to turn a copper color on the bottom half, but I took the picture a few days before the discoloration.

Thanks

Well, the metalic smell is your windcover melting. I wouldn't really do it but it's up to you. It probably isn't a good idea, shouldn't poison as you say your coals or anything, but you might ruin your cover. As for the coals, do you always buy from there and they are usually fine? Otherwise you might be getting counterfeit cocos. The other reason I can think of is water damage, your coals might have been exposed to moisture and thus absorbed some water, which makes them turn off faster and give off less heat.

An easy way to fix this that I read from a fellow user would be to put them in the oven at a low temperature, this should evaporate everything and leave them crispy and good to go.

Good luck and happy smoking!

Thanks guys, I'll try the oven trick. And yes, they're usually fine from the place I buy them. What's odd is that they're only $9 for 108, or is this a normal price? But I doubt they're counterfeit.

use foil made windcovers on that thing, or a can. Works for me. Be careful though, gets HOT.

Shit, why did I think of using my wind cover instead of foil? Yeah this gets really hot too, gotta pick it up with tongs.

Is this a new box of Cocos? I left a open box a friend's place for a long time and they were doing the same thing.

Since then, I place my box of Cocos into a sealed zip lock freezer storage bag.

You live in Glendale? Are you buying your coals from Super King? I always buy my coals from there, but my last two batches of 108 were acting exactly as you describe.I picked up a new batch yesterday, and these stay lit.
