Default Just got back from the Vets office

My poor Mastiff has been off-kelter for a week or so now...finally decided to take her to the vet, for fear of her having a bad ear infection causing her motor skills to be non existant. Well, as i noticed yesterday, this was no ear infection....she seem to be weak, and no consistantly holding up her weight mainly on her back legs. Shes still a baby, maybe 5 months old. Weighed in today at 52 pounds. Come to find out, she has a Neuromuscular disease of some sort and may effect her life. Now, when i found this out, i did exactly what im doing while im typing this.....balling my eyes out. Shes such a great dog and so beautiful. Anyways, the bloodwork will come back this evening and I will know more. I know its dumb that i wrpte all this on the hookah forum, but i had to let it out somewhere. More than likey, I will have to take her to Ohio State University's Neurologist Veternarian. Its breaking my heart to see my poor puppy walk around aimlessly with little control of her body. Anyone ever heard of this or know anything about OSU's Vet facilities?

Thanks in advance :/

Sorry to hear that you're having to go through this. I truly feel for you. Our pets so quickly become part of the family. I have no knowledge of this type of disease, or the facilities, only words of condolences. I hope the tests come out as best they can. Wishing all the best.

Very sorry to hear about this. We had a similar yet different circumstance. I wont go into the sad details. But best of luck my friend.

Blood test results came back today. Definetly neurological. Dont know the severity of it, but im going to contain her and keep her calm for 3 weeks, if possible, until she gets her next step of booster shots. Then we will go from there. Gonna monitor until then and see which, if any, way the neurological disease progresses, whether it be good or bad. Thanks for the responses, and the thoughts.

I want to make it clear, there is nothing stupid about this post or your decision to share this strife with us. My dog suffered from a neuro-muscular disorder late in her life, so I know the symptoms you are talking about. I don't have any advice and I wish I did. I can't entirely relate to the situations, but I can kind of understand. I'll admit that I have a misty eye or two.

I wish you the best and I hope that there is something that can be done. Best of luck to you an your pup. Never feel bad about venting or just sharing here.

This makes me so sad to hear. I've often contemplated what I would do without my puppy, as she is my best friend and every time I do it brings me to emotional wreckage. I hope everything will work out for you and her. It would make me so happy to know everything worked out well.

Best of luck, man. I don't know what I'd do in the face of that, I love my puppy like a daughter.
Keep us posted.

That terrible man, our dog is a member of the family, if something happened to her we'd be pretty torn up too.

Update: looks like ive found the problem. Its called Wobblers Disease. The disease effects large breed animals and dogs. Horses, cattle, great danes, dobermans, mastiffs, etc. Im not 100% sure without neuro tests, but thats what it looks like. So, i have an appointment scheduled for tuesday to take her to Columbus, Ohio to a neuro specialist vet and run tests on her to find out for sure, and go forward with treatment from there. If it is Wobblers, medicine is a treatment, where steriods would be administered, and the success rate for improvement is around 30%, surgery however, is at an 80% success rate, and much more expensive. Depending how much progression there is with the disease surgery may be necessary. There is also accupuncture (spelling?) , which i also belive has a high success rate. After being diagnosed, the dogs average lifespan is around 4 years, which is sad honestly, but i feel if it costs me more money than I have, its the right thing to do. Its not her fault she is sick. Its gonna be a long road ahead, and very mentally and emotionally challenging, but i think her, and myself, are strong enough to fight through it.

Sad as it may be, I think you have the right mindset. You love her, but her comfort and quality of life is paramount. I hope that it turns out to be something more treatable. Best of luck, as always. I know that feeling and it's never an easy one.

That's an awesome outlook. Positivity is paramount. I wish you both the best of luck.

It warms my heart to know that people care about their dog as much as I do! I'm so glad you are going through with treatment! Good luck!
