If heat is the issue for you; try keeping the coals on the outer rim of the bowl, and move the coals inward as they begin to die down. Also, get a windcover and use it with less coals. (if you don't have one already)

I use 1/4 stick of an Exotica and a windcover with a standard Egyptian clay bowl. I use this set up for everything and never burn my shisha tobacco. I get plenty flavor and smoke too.

I use 3 CH nats on a KM bowl and I found that alot of it depends on the way you poke the tinfoil.
Start with a normal pattern, but use barely any holes. Then start the session and when the smoke gets harsher, poke more holes and purge it. Repeat as necessary. This always works for me and I never get any harshness.
Also, make sure your not burning the shisha.

I think that this is pretty much a matter of trial and error. There has been many posts on this recently and EVERYONE has a different way that works perfectly for them.

Well, for me, nakhla requires less heat than other tobaccos because it isnt soaking in juice. Its a good thing, you get great flavor, pay a lot less for tobacco and a lot less for coals!

anyhow dunk's setup works, i dont use exotica's ill use 2 and occasionally 3 ******* hookah coals.

my setup is :

small ceramic bowl, HD Foil w/large holes (toothpick), 2 coconaras + windcover
coals are placed in the middle to heat it up, them I move them to the outside edges

small phunnel, HD Foil w/large 3 ring around holes (toothpick), 3 coconaras no cover
coals are placed along the edges with about 1mm of the coal end sticking off the bowl on the sides

I use the phunnel for mandarin flavor and my small ceramic for all other naklah

I'm going to suggest something different.

Do you know how old your Nakhla is? Depending on the vendor you got it from, it could have been gathering dust on a shelf for two years. It might just be dried out.

Usually a touch of glycerine will bring it back and make it less touchy about the heat.
