Default new tobacco taxes?

i heard as of april 1st tobacco taxes are going up in the US.

i tried searching the forums and i tried to google it, but i can't find anything. so, i'll just ask here. please supply a link if this question has already been asked before, or if the answers are somewhere else.

this is what i wanted to ask.

1. how much are the taxes going up? is it going to be a certain percent per pound? per ounce? per gram?

2. are all 50 states affected? can i go to jersey and avoid the new tax? (haha)

3. also, since premium shishas (like starbuzz) are already freakin $20.00 a tin, will the price go up? or stay the same? i don't think starbuzz can afford having another price increase.

i think theyre going up just by percentage
im pretty sure starbuzz will go up in price but i doubt its anything to cry about if your already buying starbuzz on account of it being really expensive

I don't think its by percent of retail value. Pretty sure its by weight...so all shisha would get the same flat rate increase.

aren't tobacco taxes added post-subtotal anyways? in which case the sticker price probably won't change but the amount you hand over to the sales clerk will...

when was the last time you saw a "tax" part added to the subtotal when u bought shisha..its included in the price.

pretty sure this tax will be put on all existing inventory as well. so prices will go up by the tax amount.

i dont know that much...read like half an article, but i think thats how i remember it working.

everytime you go to a headshop to buy shisha and pay with ur card... or if they just don't like you. If the shop includes its taxes in the sticker price then the sticker will go up but if they just add it like normal the amount they add will change

A lot of tobacco taxes lately have been just flat rate taxes. Like in wisconsin last year I know cigarettes went up 1.00 per back, regardless of the the MSRP. And I know when I go into a smoke shop to buy tobacco all the taxes besides your city/county/state sales tax are already added into the price. Same as online....you don't pay salestax...as long as its not your state, but u still pay the tobacco taxes..

The big increases will be in Federal taxes. That will be nation wide. And, although lots of people don't like to claim it, that includes New Jersey.

I don't know what the increase in Hookah tobacco prices will be, I just know that the loose tobacco I buy for cigarettes will be jumping from $25 lb to almost $40.

the taxes from what i read is flat rate which is included in the price... but who the hell knows really... i think it is a bunch of bullshit myself... lets tax the smokers to pay for the children who will prob end up growning up and smoking... unless they out law it which will prob be next but then what will they tax... air? I think there is a big discussion in the serious talk forum.

i hate that tobacco prices are going to increase, but it is inevitable. anything entertaining is going to be taxed if possible...and the more they can make off it, the happier they are.

yeah i saw the percentages somewhere online the other day but i can't seem to find it now
i couldn't figure out where hookah tobacco would fit in but most of the hikes were a lil steep but tolerable (as if we have a choice) except roll your own tobacco which was jumping from somewhere around $1 to $23.78 a pound.

This site has all the tax increases on its front page. Hopefully it's accurate.

SCHIP is what it's called, and I really actually don't mind as much. Well maybe because i have ways...

Anyway, the money you spend on more taxes on tobacco products will go to fund a health care system built for children who's parents can't afford one. There are MANY different ways to go about getting children free healthcare; the tobacco monsters just decided that they could kill 2 birds with one stone, you know, kill tobacco and save children (ironic isn't it?). It has been proven that SCHIP calls for a certain amount of money, which would mean that 21 million more people would need to take up smoking, even though it will be more expensive than it was in March 2009. It doesn't make much sense, and most smart people have been stocking up recently.

I like the cause, but I don't like how they are going about funding it.

But it's America, remember? What can ya do...

agreed.

i am interested to see how much hookah tobacco goes up, it may get slightly over looked or just get an increase from a raw materials type tax. i also didnt see snuff (dry sniffing snuff not fine chewing tobacco).

Basically the issue is why tobacco consumers should be responsible for paying the health care bills of everyone's children when we already contribute far more to government coffers then any other group per capita despite being on average poorer then most? Something tells me no one wants to ask that question let alone answer it because the truth is that such a policy is grossly unfair.

Leaving aside ethics we are left with the matter of practicality and truth is that taxing tobacco consumers out of existence will provide health care for no one. What the new tax increases will do is put a lot of people out of business and cause a drastic decline in government revenue which will limit funding for a lot more then just some health care scheme.

The thing is that's not how it will end up. An increase in the wholesale cost will end up in addition to a corresponding increase in the retail price. To make matters worse, higher prices mean less sales which means that retailers will end up charging more to offset lower sales volumes. I would say that the chances of the prices only going up an additional $4 per kilo are about zero.

Default Re: new tobacco taxes?

i got a email from SSC saying

"On February 4th Congress passed a new SCHIP bill that will raise taxes on tobacco. While the bill was primarily aimed at taxing big tobacco, producers of hookah shisha will be hit hard as well. It may seem like a horrible April Fools joke, but the bill goes into effect on April 1st and so prices will go up from there.

While this is definitely unfortunate information, we're letting you know because there's still a good amount of March left to stock up on shisha before the prices get hiked! We'll be doing our best to make sure our prices stay as low as possible even with increased taxation."
