Default Does hookah etiquette exist?

I'm far from a middle eastern decent ( italian to be specific ) and I see articles all over about hookah etiquette in the middle east but is this just all whooplah or does it really exist back in the middle east, I'm really curious.

I recall seeing something about passing the hose away from the person it's going to. Hajo and TheEgyptian can probably help here.

Don't bogart the hose too much, don't pass the hose by pointing it at someone, don't cross your leg over your knee either (showing the bottom of your foot to a middle eastern person is rude in their culture).

Yes, it does exist in the Middle East, Turkey and Turkmenistan. In big city cafes that cater to young adults and tourists etiquette is sort of lax but it's still there and the venal environment one sees Occidental cafes is basically absent. In big city cafes that are by and for older people etiquette is more serious you'll be expected to act accordingly. In rural areas cafes are very serious about etiquette and you best behave or be ready to leave quickly.

The cafes I prefer to frequent are fairly conservative in that they segregate according to sex and what exactly one smokes. They don't allow you leave the hose dangle or placing the narghile on a table and things like blowing smoke rings is seen as vulgar. There is a bunch of other customs/folkways about smoking but it varies depending upon where you are and some times the patrons/owners are willing to cut foreigners more slack then the locals.

I teach my friends to smoke with the proper etiquette when they smoke with me. The smoke rings are considered very vulgar in more conservative areas like hajo said, but i've seen more youth oriented cafe's that are ok with it.

Passing of the hose is like the top thing though. I hate it when someone passes it wrong to me, just because my family taught me not to do it that way.

ya passing the hose with the tip pointing at you is very rude and offensive, i kind of fold it and make a backwards handle when im passing it

Really interesting, is there also an etiquette applied to what kind of shisha you smoke?

Lol, I thought you had to wear a clown hat with epic. No one really just out of curiosity, I tend to like to learn about other cultures and what not.

When im smoking you pass right to right (right hand to right hand) You grab it with the left you loose a turn. WASH YOUR HAND if you don't never smoking with me and my hookah again. Other then that far game.

I guess it depends who you smoke with. I don't care if you light your cigarette with the coal and you can give the hose to the next person however you want

Could someone tell me the correct way to pass the hose?

Or better yet, where I can read up on proper etiquette? One of my best friends is Middle Eastern so If I every smoke with him and his family I want to have the correct way! Thanks

Yeah, with me the etiquette is kinda lax. I always make sure to NOT pass the hose tip first... but no one but me really cares..

:\ my etiquette gets disregarded. but i dont mind, i'm not hurt. But, i do get SEVERELY pissed off when i find out that one of my bf's stupid friends dumped their ash AND butts in the ash tray. man... infuriating.

I heard it was also customary to cover the hose tip with your thumb when passing, even if it's autoseal or whatever. not so sure how sanitary that is but it makes sens

Basically rule is that you smoke something similar to what the cafe serves. Usually, it's rude to tamp your coals when smoking moassel but acceptable to do so with jurak and tombac provided that you do so in the coal carrier they leave on the table. When you smoke moassel you brush a way the ash with the tongs or a little wire bush they give you.

Thank you for posting this! If I ever make it to the middle east, and I'm sure I will eventually, I'm going to be a "hookah bar fly" so to say hehe. I was absolutely clueless about the etiquette.
