etiquette is very important in the middle east, there was a report saying how a man hit someone for showing bad etiquette.

With me Im not really big on etiquette at all just the real basic things like, dont hold the hose for too long (unless I have a multihose setup going), dont light cigs on my coals, dont knock over my hookah or try to move my coals. Im not gonna dog on anyones culture and tradition but No smoke rings and not showing your bottom foot are kinda obsurd to me...

Being from Lebanon and smoking in Jordan, i know that etiquette exists, i do not know about smoke rings, but come to think of it smoking in cafes back home in Lebanon in Tripoli and Beirut as well as Amman, Jordan I never saw anyone make smoke rings and I smoked at cafes and lounges atleast twice a day my last visit. I do remember when passing the hose people sometimes tapped my back while giving me the hose etc. as a sign of friendship/respect. I can say for sure passing the hose with the tip facing is disrespectful. Im in college now and one thing i dont allow when people want to smoke with me, is basically dont f*** with my setup or my coals when we're out smoking, of course, im talking about if it's my argeelah or hookah as it's better known as.

I usually face east when smoking ..... kidding

As long as people aren't slobbering all over my Razan or trying to deep throat it or hog it, there isn't much to follow in my house.

in Iranian culture,

when you get the hookah hose from someone else you tab the person's hand before getting the hose from them as show of respect.

I am not one to strictly follow the old rules but there are some minor courtesies that I make sure apply to all of my hookah sessions.

Always allow for equal time with the hose.
Make sure to wipe the mouth tip before passing it
Warn people if you are going to blow out. Especially important on a multiple hose hookah.
Do not put the hose down on the ground or anything else dirty. If you are not using it pass it on and if it is done then wrap it up.
Plug the hose when not drawing from it.

I will think of more.

The etiquette of hookah smoking is very important in some cultures and often times it is regarded as disrespectful to break away from these traditions. Etiquette also helps to keep all hookah smokers happy.
► Smoking a hookah pipe is about patience and tolerance, so relax and enjoy it.
► There is no urgency or competitiveness when smoking a narghile, unlike the smoking sessions using other glass pipes or water pipes. So smoke until you are pleased and then pass it on to the next person.
► As a courtesy, turn the hose connection of the metal stem toward the next person as you are handing them the hose.
► Never light cigarettes using the lit charcoal on top of the hose.
► Never light a self-lighting charcoal on top of the hookah- the extra smoke will overwhelm the tobacco flavors.
► Do not blow smoke in the face of another person.
► With a multi-hose hookah, do not blow into the hookah hose to clear the smoke while another person is smoking.
► Never share your plastic mouthpiece with another person, as it does not promote good hygiene.
► When you are finished smoking hookah, wrap the hookah hose around the metal stem.

I also heard that it is very impolite to put the hookahs on the tables too.

i know the etiquette but i dont really use it, i prefer to have my hookahs on the ground, but at friends i will put it on a table usually a low one that is more convenient.

i usually try to pass the hose back at my self, i always hold the hose closer to the bottom of the handle but i have just gotten used to holding it in my left hand which i know is bad for a traditional way.

no one smokes anything but hookah inside where i smoke now so there is no worry about lighting cigs off the coals

I was smoking at a party and this happened to me and I was baffled until a friend of mine explained it to me.

I have a few simple rules, the obvious don't point the hose at me, thank you very much. Don't tamper with my coals/setup, wait your damn turn you impatient smokers. I don't take offense to seeing the bottoms of people's feet, but I really appreciate it when people display proper etiquette.
