Default Help me with my new phunnel bowl

So I've got a phunnel bowl in the mail; should arrive today barring any tardiness on Fedex's part. Until now, I've only used the Egyptian bowl that came with my KM and after an hour of forum searching and reading old threads, I'm thoroughly confused with regards to using a phunnel bowl. I was hoping you guys could either point me in the right direction or give me a quick primer.

I will be using Exotica natural coals and currently have some AF and Starbuzz in the house.

This is the phunnel I ordered:http://www.**********.com/product.sc...2&productId=34

What I'm looking for is some directions regarding shisha packing and coal usage/heat management. Also, whats the deal with all the mods? I've read a whole bunch of threads that mentions mods of some sort, funky hole arrangements on the foil etc that have me quite confused.

yeah that bowl is huge O_O
try using a tea light candle as a scali mod

im at school so i cant link an instructional video but basically
remove the candle
cut little triangles around the rim of the tin that holds the candle
place it over the opening of the bowl
it should allow for smoke to travel through the bottom of the bowl and hold up the foil so it doesnt restrict air flow
plus itl let you use less tobacco

if no one has done it by the time i get home il link you an instructional video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeA8qdFDUsk

Video explains all, instead of the coconara's i was using, use 3 1"-1.5" exotica pieces and move them around the side of the bowl every 10 or so minutes

I've done some more reading. Tell me if I have this right.

The point of all these mods is to allow airflow since, given the design of the bowl, your foil would typically act as a barrier between the hole in the top of the bowl and the area with all the shisha?

Sadly, that 60-70g wont last too long with 3 people smoking it

YH it creates better airflow and aparently better taste, but also saves a lot of shisha, which is the main reason people buy or make them.

As long as you put you foil on tight airflow shouldnt be a problem

What about coals? I think 3 1" pieces should suffice and as long as they're evenly spread, I shouldn't have to rotate. Any opinions?

rotating any coals is a good idea as it heats up the whole bowl evenly, if you leave coals in one place only that part of the bowl is gonna get used to its full potential and not all of it.

i dont use exoticas anymore but 3 1" pieces should be fine, but you might need more heat so im not sure

Well, moving the coals will always help. even if its just a few milimeters, just rotate them evenly. and 2 layers of foil helps heat managment

My advice is do not sprinkle your tobacco and try to make smaller holes. No hole in the middle and make sure that tobacco is not touching the foil.

Happy smoking !!

The main point of a mod—at least, the mod I think you're talking about—is to re-direct air flow. Because, in a conventional funnel, the hot air won't touch the tobacco or juices at the bottom of the bowl. It'll get the tobacco and juices at the top to the top-middle of the bowl, but not the bottom. This is because of the work required to get air to the bottom of the bowl. The scalli mod, and all related, changes air flow so that it goes through all of the tobacco, while still getting good airflow. It does this by requiring that the air goes through the bottom, then up into the hole.

This can be done by the scalli mod from Minnesota Hookahs (MNH) or from a variety of home-made mods, such as the tea candle mod mentioned above. It's not necessary for a funnel, but it will keep the bowl going longer, allow you to use less tobacco, and will actually completely smoke the bowl.

Tobacco packing can be done basically in any way you find works well. Try out a bunch of methods, and see what works well for you! I find that packing in longer cut tobacco, like Nakhla, AW, or Tangiers, works well to get good clouds and have thick smoke, while it's not required for tobacco like AF or Starbuzz. You can still pack in Starbuzz pretty tightly and find that it smoke well though. It's all about figuring out what goes well with your set-up!

Yes it will. Should last you at least 2 hours.
The phunnel keeps the juices from going down the stem making your sessions last much longer.

I use a Tangiers Medium phunnel and smoke AF, Nahkla and starbuzz with it.

For the packing, you don't need to pack it tight, I sprinkle the shisha in and just pack it down to keep it below the outside rim level so that it doesn't touch the foil.

I use 3 chunks of coal when I'm using CH Naturals, or I've recently gotten some Alalali coals that are gigantic, so 2 of those is fine and they last FOREVER.

My hole pattern is 3 square 'patches' of holes just smaller than the size of the coals, sit the coal on top of that, good times.

I just got my first nakhla in yesterday (Mizo Grape) and with 3 people smoking it I'm still getting flavourful, thick clouds after >5 HOURS<. I've gone through 5 sets of coals and the boal probably stil has another session in it before it dies.

That's just awesome. Once you get your phunnel techniques right, you'll wonder how you smoked without one.

Good luck!

yeah but dont forget.. once you start using your phunnel.. time goes by quick..
and when time goes by and your smoking in a phunnel only.. you wake up one day thinking: where the hell did my favourita shishas go ??
-Ohh yeah.. The phunnel!
Get a standard clay bowl to smoke as good as a phunnel for at least 45 mins to 1 hour.. it takes just a few grams of tobacco.. and since it doesnt last as long as a phunnel then you can just change it every once in a hour to get new fresh tobacco and new flavours if u'd like.. dont even have to change water in between..

so this way your shisha will last for 10 times longer then smoking only in phunnel !
