Default Hookah noobie needs some advice

hey all im am new to hookah smoking, and had some questions...

1. have three kings charcoal....what kind of coal is it quick light? natural? how do i tell the difference, the package and website did not specify

2. when i smoke my hookah i can barley taste the smoke, any suggestions?

3. when ever i finish smoking, the top layer of the tobacco blackened but everything under that is seemingly un burnt at all (although quite warm), is that normal? how do i fix it?

some info about my set up..

i am currently using starbuzz (blue mist flavor) shisha, (i was told its really good)

the hookah i am smoking is one i got from my local tobacco shop for like 60 bucks, i can post pictures if necessary.

i usually put ice in the base (not always) and sometimes i mix a little bit of milk in the water ( i read online it makes the smoke better)

when i smoke i sometimes get a weird after taste, i think it might be from really burnt shisha but im not sure

i usually use 1 or 2 coals at a time, i split them in half, making 4 small ones.

any suggestions? if you need more info just ask. thank you for the help guys.

First about the coals

buys some Coconarus or CH coals that will prolly help out the taste part

2nd about the shisha

fluff it out and sprinkle it in there and don't let your foil touch it. After you're done with your session the whole bowl of shisha should be burnt not just the top

3 kings are quicklights
they should be ok. nats are usually the way to go

the milk isnt necessary
and if your not getting enough flavor drop the ice

when your smoking do you actually taste the smoke? like is it harsh? hookah in no way resembles the taste of a cigarette... if its harsh your doing it wrong
the tobacco should not be burning
make sure the tobacco itself is not touching the foil

Your using 3 kings coals, and they are quick lights, the difference is most quicklights light in under a minute with a lighter where as naturals take longer

I think you should not put milk or ice in the base at first and when you get mor eflavour you can add the ice, as ive noticed the ice reduces the flavour of the shisha

Swift Lite coals are the devil if they're the ones I've bought in the past. Lots and lots of horrible smelling smoke right? Like a ridiculous amount? I had to use them for another purpose they were the absolute worst.

if you have a bunch of ash inside the bowl with your shisha you are making to big of holes in your foil try making a lot more small holes. unless these coals are that bad

some quicklites have very fine ash... so even medium sized holes would probably let some ash in... but making the holes smaller, but more of them, as nibbz said is a good idea...

dry shisha on top, with wet shisha on bottom sounds like there isn't a big enough gap between the foil and shisha. And if you're smoking blue mist... there won't be a "tobacco" taste...
The hookah you bought shouldn't really make a difference... a good set up of the shisha/coals will smoke well with any rig, in my opinion... it just gets BETTER with the quality rigs.
And if you're new to setting up your own hookah, or new in general, i'd say not to use milk yet until you've gotten good at it, then try experimenting... it's easier to disect any problems that arise if you try something new if you've been doing it well for a while...
and maybe don't use as much ice? water that's super cold kind of mutes the flavors, in my experience...

the best "n00b" guide to check out would be Sambooka and JillyIsJustKidding's videos on setting up a hookah... there are probably other members who posted How-To's that are good... but SamB's and Jilly's are the ones i've seen and they're good.

Your smoke tastes awful cuz your either

A) putting to many coals on
B) packing to high
C) packing to tight

or a combo

Kings make the tobacco not taste as good but it would not be a reason why it taste awful!

Ah the days when I first started smoking hookah, no worries tho we were all noobies once right. I still learn tricks to this day. Like others have said make sure you are poking small holes, tip of a toothpick works great. Also I found that if I periodically pause smoking to brush the ash off the bowl that helps out a lot from keeping the ash out of there. Also a good way to get tobacco heights right is to make sure that you dont pack above the rim of the bowl at all, sprinkle it in little by little (I like to leave stems out) and then wrap a nice tight foil cover on their. Depeding on your bowl size your Coals maybe too big/too many, I have smoked with the Taru-Big coals and if the bowl is a bit smaller the smoke is A LOT harsher. Otherwise trial and error is always the best way. Good luck and keep on smoking

dude... maybe you are just poking really big holes. i use 3 kings all the time, and i get great smoke flavor. you need to poke smaller holes maybe, and ash your coals regularly in the ash tray. just drop em and roll em a couple times. this way the ash will be in the ash tray, not in the bowl all over your beloved roasting shisha. hope this helps.

Another thing. after you ash your coals, and you see that there is a little ash sitting on top of the aluminum foil, just lightly blow it off. this will help to ensure that you dont get ash in the holes.
