Im finding it really hard to remove the stem from the vase of my new KM, i can get it out, it just takes some doing.

Any techniques for getting it out easier?

run the grommet under some water before u put it in the vase. It should remove ok from there. Also, some folks have rubbed olive oil on the grommet.

Olive Oil on the base grommet or you can sand it down, either one works fine.

ya the water on the grommet gets it in and out much easier, olive oil works but i found on some rubber grommets it kind of breaks it down a bit.

I already use the water method, i guess im not using enough, but this thing is really tight. Smokes excellent tho.

Anyone tried vaseline? i wonder if that would work.

sounds like you may need a different grommet. What # are you using? I'm not sure what # grommet KMs use but I know most Syrian narghile use a # 26.

I had the same problem with my new KM also. What i did, is to use olive oil on the inside of the grommet for some days. After that, it settled it self alone and i dont have problem removing it or inserting it.

if the rubber grommet is petroleum based rubber vaseline i dont think would be a good idea, i think Vaseline will lead to it breaking down or mess it up, it has a history of breaking down rubber orings

some are tighter than others, but just water, elbow grease and a bit of use will make it easier after time.

I really have no idea why you bother with this.. A big grommet is clumsy, its UGLY its not safe ( cannot carry hokkah in stem for example ) ...
why dont u do as me and many other ppl have done for yeaaars..
Remore the grommet.. and use electric tape or similair tape around the stem and use enough for it to be as tight as possible.. and THATS IT!
you can now lift your hookah in the stem each time your going anywhere..
this is what they do in many arabic hookahshops.. they dont use grommets and bend down to grab the hookah in teh base every time they lift it ( back injurys man ! ).. they lift it in the stem !

If it's loose enough to remove the stem for cleaning then it's too loose for me to risk my base dropping by carrying by the stem IMO.

I move my hookah once when I transfer it to the floor and once again when I bring it to where I clean it. That is not a hassle.

yeah but Im not talking about only being able to lift it in the stem.. if you change the gromemt as I said you will have:
a prettier hookah ( no ugly ass grommet between the base and stem )
much easier to seperate stem from base and to put it back in
_and_ being able to lift in the stem

theres only positive awaitings from changing the grommet against tape except 1 thing.. It takes about 20 minutes to do this.. first of all the KM grommet is reeaaaally tght so you must work for a while to get it off.. and then its jsut to start taping round and around and when you have reached a certain thickness then just try it on and from there you can adjust it so its perfect..
I have said this on the forum for loong time but only 1 person have ever tried it ( as I know ) and that was the Syrian master FarBeyondDriven ... Ask him about it.. he's very satisfied!

Mine was too big for the bottom too, but when i lubed it up it would slide out too easy on its own. I just ground it down with sandpaper and it fit tight but not where it would come out easy....

I realize that sounds dirty, but I wont change it.

I either sand my grommets down or apply a silicone lubricant on it. Dont judge me, it slides in like a charm .

definitely sand the grommet.

i wouldn't use brute force. think about what youre doing. when you jam the stem in you put a ton of the pressure on the vase, and when you pull it out, youre pulling that already stressed vase apart...weakening the vase, ending in possible tragedy (and a waste of 20+ dollars).

glass donest get weakened, its not like metal where it gets work hardened, it just has its stress point where it fails. i agree its not the best idea to be forcing in a stem but its not because you will weaken the glass

+1 I'd do both. Sand it down a bit then pick up a tube of lube that is made for o-rings (wont destroy the rubber grommet). In a pinch I've used hand lotion to slick it up and slide it in when its tight.
