Default How far should I keep the coal?

I am new to Hookah - and i have been reading here.
I just read to not allow the shisha to become stuck to the foil and coals.

How afr of a space should be allowed between the shishaand coals where the coals will still deliever an effective amount of heat?

I usually allow for a cushion of air approximately 1/8" between the foil and the tobacco.

I also try to make sure to place the fresh coals (the hottest coals) around the outside perimeter, never directly in the middle.

Hope that helps!

Cheers!

With that in mind, when is the optimal time to add more coals? Right now, using the Tangiers Medium Funnel, I start the bowl with 3 Golden Easy Lights. However, last night I needed a 4th coal to generate thicker smoke. I am assuming I may have again, overpacked the bowl and it was too tight.

Someday I am going to learn how to pack a perfect bowl everytime.. This gets frustrating at times.

CJ, If I am using Golden Quicklights, I usually use 1.5 (3 halves) around a standard bowl or small phunnel. That is with most traditional brands of tobacco ...
