Default lava rock

Has anyone tried using lave rock as a heat source and if so what were the results like? I'm talking about the re-useable coals from gas barbecues and wondering if they would work as a substitute to natural coal. I'm thinking they probably wouldn't give off any flavour as they generally don't smell and are burned repeatedly. Anyway, any thoughts welcome - thanks

Humm that sounds interesting. Do they stay hot for long? I thought they were like used to spread the heat or something.

Yeah there would be no way for it to stay hot. They as mentioned above are used to even and spread out heat in a gas grill.

i think its going to be like what happened when some one used the little glass beads a while ago, it will last a few mins but then cool off to much. i dont think you are going to find anything that will hold enough heat to last more than 5 mins

Maybe if you used some hot lava...

I've been wanting to go back to hawaii, I'll take my hookah along and try.

Anyone know if they make bowls that stand up to a bajillion degrees? I don't think my MNH glass bowl will work.

I hope you know that was entirely BS. They never heated them and they never smoked with them.

i thought i remembered they tried to heat them and use them but they didnt last enough time to get any smoke. i knew they had played that they lasted for like an hour which i know there is no way in hell that could happen, 10 mins where they are to hot to touch, sure but thats probably about it.

they may work to spread out the heat and conserve on coals ... like set the coal on top of it ...

but they will not hold heat long enough to actually work ... they are just made to even the heat dispursion ... esp on gas grills....

hmmm i know there are ceramic screens but maybe we need to look at them more or revisit them and maybe use them on top of the foil to even the heat out

one of them maybe 1/4" thick .. with holes drilled in it ... set on top of the foil ... and a single coal on top of it should put out decent heat i would think
