Default FDA to regulate tobacco now?

Sure looks like it! The senate has passed the bill, now it's going to the house, and then to the president's desk... A smoker himself!

I'm looking for an article now that doesn't pretty much say "YAY" in it and instead delivers some facts on the bill. If you want to read a stupid one, take a look at the first one that popped up on Google:

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/wa...bacco_measure/

I don't have a huge issue with regulation per se (I think they should state exactly what additives are in their cigs, etc) but some of the things they WANTED in it are freaking ludicrous. These are two of the things they wanted to put in but couldn't:

-No more menthol cigarettes (they said it was racist)
-Cigarettes can't contain nicotine (they said it would create a black market)

I can't find anything else that they wanted and didn't get. But basically what it comes down to is the FDA can regulate WHATEVER THEY WANT about tobacco now. I am pissed to no end! They wanted the wrong thing, and they even struck those down in their minds for the wrong reasons? What the hell!

I should be able to smoke cigarettes with as many additives as I fucking want! Whether it be menthol, extra extra extra nicotine, burning agents, etc. And if you don't want those cigarettes, buy a different pack!

cigarettes can't contain nicotine or menthol? but they can still contain arsenic, formaldehyde, and benzine? that makes no sense.

how the hell can you get a cig to contain no nicotine? put it in water for a month?

and do you know how or if this will affect hookah tobacco?

I think cigarettes are going to be the major target, if they move to shisha I would think it would be after pipes, cigars, chewing tobacco. So hopefully shisha will be last on the list if it's on it at all.

From what I have been reading the FDA probably won't have to do anything about hookas. Raliegh NC already has a bill going into effect Jan 2, 2010 that will put any hooka bar or restaurant out of business.

Why does the government have to protect us from ourselves?

it's not really the Government, it's the politicians who can't say NO to the special interest groups putting money in their pockets.

It seems to me that about 75% of politicians smoke as it is. So there could be no other reason than money for them to vote to pass a bill banning or limiting tobacco. After all I am pretty sure that the ALA (As well as various other groups of the MORON majority) has contributed their share of "Campaign Funds" to many politicians to get them to vote for these bills.

Ah yes but the government is composed of nothing but these short-sighted, greedy, and stupid politicians. Of course, there are some bright-eyed and bushy-tailed rookie politicians who honestly want to do what's best for the people, but their voices are inevitably drowned out, and guess what? We get "revolutionary" legislation that further shackles the ignorant public, who in turn thank the government for protecting them.

The language used in the legislation is vague enough that it can easily be used to regulate any tobacco product that is not specifically exempt. Also, the interpretation will be left to the FDA until they are successfully sued in court (i.e. never). Anyone that thinks the FDA will turn down an opportunity to regulate more stuff, justify bigger budgets and hire more staff please contact me right away since I some stunning investments on the lunar surface i'd like to bring up to date on.

there are sevral threads about this, the common belifes are that prices will go up, they have not listed shisha as a target for any of their planned cahnges, though they have said they want to get rid of flavored tabbacoo as it is aimed twordskids, however cigars are seen as exception to that rule, i remain hopeful they wont target shisha on the same grounds.
