Default Leather Hoses Reconsidered

As some of you know i've long been devoted to washable hoses and threw out everything else quite some time ago. In light of recent recent experiencing I find myself reconsidering leather hoses. What prompted this is using traditional Iranian leather hoses which consist of a long bit of leather with heavy stitching and no outer cover. The handles are simple bits of wood held in place place with small wood rings and a couple of screws. While they don't look as fancy as they KM houses they work much better.

Some of you are doubtlessly asking "what do you mean by working better?" well basically that means they have effortless pulls producing huge amounts of smoke and they impart a better taste. The pull is no mystery since the hose and mouth piece are literally 1/3 to a half again bigger in diameter then a KM hose. The taste is interesting in that the smoke tastes a bit more richer and more complicated but nothing that I can actually characterize as leather tasting. Supposedly the leather absorbs nicotine according to the people that use them but I have no idea if that is true although since the smoke is mellower they may be right.

Basically people clean it out with a little electric pump that you use to fill tires and what not which seems to work great since all sorts of crud gets blown out.

Of course if you use a leather hose you best use it with a single flavour since you can't clean it.

Since you can't buy decent leather hoses in the Western world I suppose you'd best off making one your self which shouldn't be a big a deal if you know someone that knows how to sew.

Some people like the KM leather hoses for this reason.

interesting...i've never had good luck with them, but this idea of "traditional leather hoses" is kind of appealing. I can't sew, but would try one if i came across it.

Thanks for the info!

I am a big fan of leather hoses and I strongly think that they are much better than washable hoses for the fact that they give me better taste. However, for better results, you should not smoke more than one flavor with the same hose.

What prompted me to reconsider leather hoses was walking into a Ghelyoon cafe in Babol and having all the locals jaws hit the floor when they saw me take out an AF "healthy hose" out of my brief case (I never travel without a a few) and being ask "why would you use such a thing". Well, since my experiences with non-washable hoses of any type has been negative I really stopped to consider that I was using leather hoses the wrong way. So I listened to the locals explain to me that leather absorbs nicotine and adds flavour to the jurak they were smoking and "being in Rome" I decided to give it a try and sure enough it was better then a disposable or washable hose.

Now the thing thing is that I am not sure how practical leather hoses are for us in the West so I don't see my way of smoking changing much. What do I mean by that exactly? Well I suppose am like almost everyone here in that I smoke a pretty big range stuff (anything from Fantasia triple apple to tombac) and so using leather would require that have something like 100 hoses to label and organize. Honestly I don't see myself spending several thousand on hoses anytime soon. Also, while the KM hoses are nice I think the more traditional styles are more appealing and more functional which is a pity since I can't even buy them here. bottom line, I guess i'm stuck with my namours, AF safe hoses and the cheap washable deals that hookah-shisha.com makes.

Well Hajo, I was going through your old threads and this one interested me more than others. I recently bought some turkish leather hoses (from ELMAS NARGILE), as well as a syrian one I still have to try. I definitely love the feeling of smoking with them. Their handles, being enormous, are so light. And the taste of tobaccos seems indeed much better. The only issue is that, the huge ones are not very airtight. Still I love them. Will probably only use them for plain tobaccos, where I don't care about huge clouds.
By the way, I also love the mouthpieces, in imitation amber, and so huge: a different way of smoking. Wish I can have, one day, one made of real amber... (even if I don't use it).

Hajo & Burdar

If either of you can get me some photos of these I'd love to see them.

Everyone else:

I am a leathersmith and I may attempt to produce some of these if there is interest. They probably won't be cheap, but I'll definitely make the prices as reasonable as I can afford to.

I seriously doubt it was rawhide. Rawhide smells of cess and turns to glue when it gets wet. It had to be something else.

Hmmm, I can sew and have the materials for doing some leather work as well. I might just try making one of these. It would be fun at the least and a cool way to smoke out of a home-made hose . . . would go well with my repaired bowl. LOL But seriously, it doesn't seem like to daunting a task. Smoke happy.
